Seminar: Don’t Get Scammed - Thursday, April 15 at 2:30 p.m.
This session outlines the nature of certain scams that have plagued seniors and the general population recently. “Extortion scams are now number one for the number of reports we get. There were 17,390 different extortion scams reported in 2020,” said Jeff Thomson, an RCMP investigator with the Anti-Fraud Centre. Not only are seniors at risk of financial loss due to extortion attempts, seniors are particularly vulnerable to identity theft. In the past, scammers have used stolen identities to rack up credit card debt, borrow money, etc. If you have kept the same access code for your bank card or credit card for many years and it’s your birth year, you are very vulnerable. If you loose a wallet or a purse with other identity such as driver’s license, thieves will immediately use the birth year to access bank accounts at an ATM. The session will outline these risks and how to protect yourself. Presented by Vince Mayne, CPA, CGA, with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada. Let us know if you can attend: kmorgan@centrewellington.ca or 519-846-9691 ext. 277.
