The Township of Centre Wellington has retained Watson & Associates Economists Ltd. (Watson) to undertake a rate study for implementing a stormwater rate.
This will help ensure that the Township's stormwater management system can continue to protect people, property, the environment and water resources both now and in the future.
Public Engagement Session #1
When: May 29, 2025 | 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: CW Community Sportsplex Hall
Purpose: The purpose of Public Engagement Session #1 is to:
- Gain an understanding of the public’s knowledge of stormwater rates
- Educate the public on how stormwater is currently funded in the Township
- Introduce the public to how stormwater is proposed to be funded in the Township as a result of the stormwater rate study
- Survey the public on what matters most to them (e.g. equity, climate change, administrative costs, special circumstances, on-site stormwater management, credits, incentives, etc.)
Stormwater Rate Study
The stormwater rate study will calculate a stormwater rate to recover the estimated capital and operating costs associated with stormwater services in the Township. If approved, the stormwater charge would be removed from wastewater rates and property taxes. A new charge would be added to residents’ CW Hydro bill.
- Stormwater refers to rain and snowmelt runoff from lawns, streets, and other surfaces
- Hard surfaces such as pavement and roofs, prevent precipitation from naturally soaking into the ground
- Stormwater management is necessary to help minimize flooding and erosion of the Township’s water courses. It involves planning for runoff, controlling the movement of stormwater, maintaining the stormwater systems, and protecting the environment, people, and properties within the Township.
- 108 km of storm sewers
- 534 maintenance holes
- 3,351 catch basins and catch basin maintenance holes
- 15 stormwater management facilities
- 31 stormwater management retention ponds
- 14 oil/grit separators
Stormwater is currently funded through a mix of property taxes and a portion of the wastewater charge residents pay through their CW Hydro Bill. Further details will be provided on costs throughout the study process.
