The Township of Centre Wellington recognizes the need for all residents to be able to safely travel within our Township. This is particularly important when it comes to schoolchildren having the ability to walk to school on safe and easy routes.

The Township of Centre Wellington has received a grant from the Government of Canada's Healthy Communities Initiative in partnership with Community Foundations of Canada and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation. This grant will be used by the Township to conduct the Church Street Multi-Use Trail Project to increase community mobility. The current Church Street allowance does not have sidewalks or a paved shoulder, despite its heavy use by schoolchildren that travel to and from school both on foot and on bicycles, and by both residents and visitors to Centre Wellington. By installing this much needed infrastructure we are not only improving the Township's active transportation network we are also insuring a greater degree of safety for our residents.

The Township obtained extensive input and community participation in the preparation of the 2014 Trails Master Plan, which included this section of missing trail infrastructure. Likewise, the Township consulted the Elora Cataract Trailway Association who were part of the Trails Master Plan process and received a letter of support for this project. Stakeholders directly affected by this proposed trail connection were also consulted and provided letters of support including the Elora BIA, Elora Public School, and Green Lanes.

Project Details

This project is supported by the Government of Canada's Healthy Communities Initiative in partnership with Community Foundations of Canada and the WindsorEssex Community Foundation. The Township of Centre Wellington is grateful for their continued efforts to support our community by creating safe and easy travel for children and parents of the Elora Public School, as well as users of the existing trail that connects to the Elora Cataract Trailway.

The former Canadian Pacific Railway line connecting Station Square in Elora to Cataract currently does not have sidewalks and is only a muddy shoulder frequently used by the public to avoid vehicles. Through this project, the Township will build a 3-metre-wide multi-use trail on the side of Church Street made of asphalt for people to use for safe walking. There will also be additional line painting and bollards to separate the trail from the road, and painted crosswalks at all road crossings. Finally, additional street trees will be planted with trail signage added. These additions are intended to increase the safety of al users of the trail.

This project will include:

  • 3-metre-wide asphalt multi-use trail
  • Line painting to separate road from trail
  • Painted crosswalk at road crossings
  • Street tree planting and signage
  • Bollards to separate road from trail
